Thirty-one International house scholars visited our north state recently, and guests and locals discovered the experience changed lives.  It always does.
Tears flowed and emotions showed when goodbyes were expressed at the departing bus, and some friendships were sealed for life.
Carly Ball, 9, daughter of Mark and Kelly, always enjoys the relationships with scholars,” said Mrs. Ball.  Florence Ma of Taiwan, a medical scholar, was hosted at the doctor’s home.  Carly finds the foreign county of the visitor on the global map.  She also enjoyed the line dancing at the Anderson Rotary party.
Dick Franks, I-House committee chair, thanks everyone involved, and was happy the scheduling went off on-time even though the weather failed to cooperate every day.
Thanks go to the companies and organizations whose donations made it possible:
Roberts R. Roberts Foundation (Carole and Ron Reynolds) for the welcome dinner; Mt. Shasta Ski Park (Andy Aguilera) for providing a day skiing at donation level prices; Silverthorn Resort (Ray Merlo, Jane Walakait and Mike Rhea) for use of the houseboats); Turtle Bay Exploration Park (Mike Warren and Maggie Redmon) for the Turtle Bay tour; Sierra Pacific Industries (Steve Gaston) for the lumber mill tour.

We wish to also thank Anderson Rotary for our Thursday night dinner and line dancing; Redding East Rotary for our Wednesday lunch; and Redding Rotary for underwriting the cost of the visit and transportation.

A heartfelt thank you also goes out to everyone who worked on the I-House Committee:  Bob Allen (arranged skiing and boating donations); John Dunlap and Stephanie Schwartz who organized the day skiing; Bob Allen, John Dunlap and Greg Dunbar (organized the day houseboat experience); Mike Wells and Les Melburg (organized the tour of Shasta Dam and our lunch with Redding East Rotary); Steve Gaston (organized the lumber mill tour and sustainable forestry talk); Chet Nowak (organized student housing assignments with Redding Rotary hosts).

Finally, a special thanks goes out to the 19 host families who welcomed and made their scholars part of their family for their week-long visit to Shasta County.

What Berkeley International House scholars visit Redding hosted by the Rotary Clubs of Redding and Anderson

Why One of the main goals of Rotary is to improve international relationships.  This visit, which has happened every year since 1954, serves as a chance for international scholars to see some of rural America, meet American families, and generally have a good time doing it.

Rotarians interested in HostingJust about anyone who has hosted a visiting scholar in their home will tell you it is very worthwhile.  If you are interested in hosting a scholar, please call Chet Novak.
