Stream Team in action- Community Clean up at Henderson's Place (Oct 1st 2011)

Henderson_1

Henderson Open Space is without urban duplication anywhere near Redding. Even the much larger CDFG Special Management Area in Anderson does not have the history, ease of access, views and variety in terms of flora and relief.
Volunteers collected and disposed of more than 50 cubic yards of litter, while the wood chippers worked nonstop for four hours. For more detail please look at Stream Team webpage.

Demotion party - Rotarian of the Year (June 30th 2011)

ROY_Randy

The demotion party for Prez. Greg was held at Bruce's Dean's estate, and was attented by over 160 members and guests. Everyone had a lot of fun (and food).
Redding Rotary President Greg Balkovek and the board of directors voted Randy Smith, Stream Team crusader, as the 2010-11 Rotarian of the Year. The honor was given to Randy at the demotion last week. Two Stream Team members Mark Ball and Ron Reynolds applauded Randy's complete passion to clear our streams for better fish habitat. One unique feature of the Stream Team is there are no sit down committee meetings. The team shows up at the site and to the tune of chain saws they eradicate the arundo. Congratulations to Randy and his hard working team.

PP_RI

Rotary's $9 billion fight to stamp out polio worldwide continues.
Past Rotary International President Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar said our $7 billion battle to date shows great results.
Pres Greg Balkovek mentioned Stenhammar's only speaking engage-ment in District 5160 honored our members for years of PH contributions and our Polio-Plus donations. Stenhammar is the trustee chairman of the Rotary Foundation.
He expects $2 billion more dollars will be needed to fight polio as the battle continues. The country of India reported 19 cases of polio last year and only one in 2011.
District Governor Karl Diekman was accompanied by many other district leaders.

International House Scholars' Visit

I_House

The International House scholars were here for 6 days (March 19th to March 24th) during which they attended the Film Festival, a welcome dinner, went skiing on Mt Shasta, went house boating on Lake Shas-ta, line danced, and toured Shasta Dam, Turtle Bay Explora-tion Park and the Sierra Pacific saw mill, and had meals with Anderson, Redding East and Redding Rotary. They are a great bunch of people who enjoyed their visit and getting to know the area their host families and Rotarians. All this even though the weather was the worst seen in years. Photogallery here.

Sundial Film Festival

Sundial FF

Film makers and photographers once again shined in Redding displaying their creations at the Sundial Film Festival (March 19th 2011). Featured were 20 films shown during the event. A really fun part of the festival was the "One Minute Movie." The challengewas to tell your story but one had to do it in just one minute. There were 12 One Minute Movies en-tered in the competition. The public viewed these films through the SDFF website and voted for their favorite online. This year there were eight student films. One of the goals of the festival was to get young people involved with film and photography. This was a great success.
On the photography side there were some 184 photographs entered by experts and novices alike. This year 874 people attended the event and no doubt all had a good time. Many participants are al-ready thinking about next year. Thanks to all who donated their time and efforts to this great event. See Sundial Photogallery

Bowlathon 2011

The Key Way Committee organized the Bowlathon 2011 in February at Shasta Lanes. We raised a lot of money for the club and, I think it’s safe to say, everyone had a wonderful time bowling and socializing with our fellow Rotarians and many of our family and friends who also attended. (Doug Wright). See the Bowlathon Photogallery.

District Givernor Karl Diekman's visit August 12th 2010

DG
DG Karl (left on this picture with Prez. Greg) gave us an image, he holds in his mind, of himself as a junior in high school trying to become a senior and sell 1500 chickens. Karl did become a senior and got some good advice from a great friend who was a first year student in law school. His friend said professionals receive so much from their community that they need to give something back. This phrase has stuck with Karl all of his adult life. Looking for a way to do this opened the door to Karl becoming a Rotarian.
In 1982 Karl was inducted into the Rotary Club of Belleair, Florida. In 1986, Karl became president. Over the years he has been a member of the Rotary Club of Ramona, the Dublin Rotary Club and the Rotary Club
of Woodland. Karl has held just about all the positions a Rotary club could offer. During his early years in Rotary Karl gave us his image of Rotary embracing the cause of eliminating polio. There are only four countries left where polio can be found. Another image from Karl is of him riding an elephant in a parade downtown Ramona. The elephant was part of a circus Karl brought to town for a fund raiser. His point was to be innovative when selecting a project but most of all have fun doing it.
In 2006 Karl participated in the Tsunami relief project for Thailand. His gave us an image of stand-ing on a bridge literally four inches wide over a swollen river. Life can be exciting.
Karl’s image of an international project while he is DG will be to take copies of the Dictionary for Life to Zambia, Africa. Rotary gives us all the opportunity to serve all over the world. One of Karl’s favorite images is a young girl in India holding up her finger indicating she had not received her polio vaccination. Fingers are marked following vaccination. Karl took care of getting her vaccinated.
Karl said Rotary’s gift to all of us is that we can serve our fellow man just about anywhere in the world.
